Bourbon In Bourbon

Who We Are

We specialize in sourcing whiskey, expertly blending and finishing in select rare ex-bourbon barrels, and offer an exclusive membership service that delivers these blends and single barrel batches directly to your doorstep.

A Little History

In the 1850s, as the Missouri Pacific Railroad started making it’s way down Old Wire Road through a new village, several railroad workers as well as farmers and ranchers were coming into the area. A man, named Richard Turner, established a general store to meet the needs of the visitors and growing community and soon started importing barrels of bourbon. He placed a bourbon barrel outside the store and it didn’t take long before all the railroad workers called the village Bourbon and the name stuck!

Collectively, we started enjoying bourbon in 2017. The more brands and mash bills we tasted and the more relationships we created in the bourbon community, our palates and appreciation for the product grew. As life circumstances required a professional pivot of us, we decided to turn our hobby into a business. We are proud of every product we bottle and send to you!

Our Story

Barrel King was born out of necessity when Jarrod and Rachael's daughter, Claire, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in May 2020. In response, Jarrod and Rachael made significant changes to their professional lives to care for Claire and their other children. They left their jobs, sold their home, and moved in with family as treatments began.

In spring 2021, the Records began exploring the process to open a Non-Distiller Producer (NDP). They secured liquor licenses, found a location, and started remodeling a site in Bourbon, Missouri.

The Records established a partnership with Rob Vossmeyer, who owned over 100 MGP bourbon and rye barrels. These barrels were delivered to Old Road Craft Spirits in November 2021, where blending and finishing commenced.

Barrel King membership opened for enrollment in March 2022, initially staffed by Jarrod, Rachael, and one other person. By August, a part-time employee was added, who became full-time by November. In August 2023, a full-time Director of Operations & Compliance joined the team, followed by Matt Porter from ADHD Whiskey as Chief Tasting Officer and Master Blender in September 2023. In February 2024, a Distillery Manager was added. In June 2024, we added an Operations Assistant and in August 2024, a Content Coordinator completed the team.

The tasting room opened in late August 2022, serving as a hub for local members to pick up bottles, sample upcoming releases, and connect with the Barrel King community. It is also open to the public for samples, cocktails, and membership information.

Sadly, Claire passed away in December 2022. However, her legacy lives on through Barrel King. Thanks to the decisions made for her care and well-being, Barrel King was established, allowing us to donate nearly $100,000 to those in need within the whiskey community.

Meet the Barrel King Team

  • Rachael Record

    CO-FOUNDER & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Rachael graduated with her MBA in 2011 and worked primarily in higher education until October 2020 when her daughter, Claire, became ill and she had to step down from her role to care for her. Opening and operating the distillery allowed Rachael to be with Claire during her 31 month battle with brain cancer. The time she was able to spend with her daughter, her husband's love for bourbon and the fact they reside in Bourbon made the idea of opening Old Road Craft Spirits a no-brainer. Rachael handles the financial side of the business as well as socials.

  • Jarrod Record

    CO-FOUNDER

Jarrod found his passion for bourbon in 2017 and explored every brand and mash bill he could find in bottles ranging from $20 to $2000. When his daughter became ill in 2020 he had to pivot professionally in order to stay home and assist in her care. Opening and operating the distillery combined his interest in bourbon and the ability to be home every night. Jarrod handles all operations of the distillery and is now an aspiring master blender.
